Catholic Identity

Faith Formation

St. Margaret Mary students receive daily instruction in religion and Catholic doctrine. Students attend All School mass once a week and an additional daily mass twice a month. All students participate in the religious education program.

Sacraments

•Students in second grade receive special preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. This includes a special day of reflection for each sacrament.

•Students in eighth grade receive special preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. All students, Catholic and non-Catholic, will receive instruction leading to Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. All students, Catholic and non-Catholic, and their parents participate in meetings, retreats, and other events leading to these sacraments. Non-Catholic students will not, of course, receive the sacrament, but, as a part of the class, will be given an inclusive role in the ceremony.

•Reconciliation Services are routinely held during Advent and Lent, as well as other times during the year.

•Retreat: As part of preparation for Confirmation, eighth grade students attend a retreat off site.

Service / Stewardship

The Step by Step program was introduced at St. Margaret Mary in 2004. The purpose of this program is to bring our Christian call to stewardship into the school at all grade levels. The program was designed to teach our students at SMM that no one is too young to make a difference. Step by Step is run by parent and grandparent volunteers who work in conjunction with the teachers and the parish to rein force the idea of stewardship. Volunteers begin each year educating students about stewardship and the needs within our community. Each grade has its own focus for volunteering their time. The idea behind the various focuses is to expose our students to as many volunteer opportunities as possible while they are students at SMM. Listed below are the themes focused on by each grade this past year.

Kindergarten - Focus Introduction to Stewardship, Project – Ronald McDonald Pull Tab, Placemats

First Grade – Hungry and Needy – Dare to Care Food Bank

Second Grade - The Environment – Can collection, grounds clean up

Third Grade – Sick and Disabled – St. Mary’s Center

Fourth Grade – Elderly – Meadowview Rehab. Center, Oxmoor Lodge

Fifth Grade – Babies, Children, Moms – Kid’s Café

Sixth Grade – Homeless & Literacy – Family Shelter House

Seventh Grade – Military & Refugees – Military Mailings, Refugee Apt. Set up, Refugee Welcome Baskets, Refugee Easter party and Thanksgiving brunch

Multiple service projects are done by all grade levels throughout the year. Some of these include serving lunch at the Franciscan Shelter House, collecting food for Dare to Care, collecting shoes for Edge Outreach, collecting blankets and coats for the Warm Drive, making rosaries for the missions and collecting eyeglasses just to name a few.
